Before You Email Us

We receive a high volume of generic, templated inquiries every week. Following this three-point protocol ensures your email is read with priority and demonstrates that you understand the rigor of our experimental laboratory.

01

Name the Research Program

Identify which of our four research themes (e.g. Cryogenic Valleytronics, CMOS-Compatible Silicon Heterostructures, or vdW Deterministic Stacking) matches your specific intellectual curiosity. Generic statements like “I am interested in your prestigious research” are filtered out.

02

Showcase Concrete Physical Artifacts

We value hands-on experimental craft. Tell us about physical instruments you built, cleanroom fabrication recipes you optimized, laser optics you aligned, or Python / MATLAB data analysis pipelines you authored.

03

Internalize Doctoral Realities

A PhD in experimental optoelectronics requires patience and high tolerance for experimental ambiguity. Things will fail repeatedly before yielding clean data. Please read our candid guide to doctoral life before committing five years.

The ALO ExperienceWhat Sets Our Laboratory Apart

Why Do Your Research Here?

Doctoral and postdoctoral work at ALO is built around independent system mastery, uncompromised measurement integrity, and world-class instrumentation.

Full Experimental Ownership

Master the whole pipeline: from 2D deterministic transfer and cleanroom e-beam lithography to microwave probing and cryogenics.

Cryogenic & Optical Infrastructure (Under Development)

Help build — and then get direct, hands-on access to — a 4 K closed-cycle cryostat, micro-PL / Raman spectrometers, and an RF wafer probe station, all currently under development.

High-Impact Scholarly Rigor

One-on-one manuscript mentoring targeting ACS Nano, Physical Review B, and npj 2D Materials, with travel support for international conferences.

Dual Academy & Deep-Tech Trajectory

Preparation tailored to top postdoctoral fellowships worldwide (Singapore, Europe, US) or, in the longer term, deep-tech entrepreneurship through routes such as STEP-IIT KGP.

Field Note from the PI

What I wish someone had told me before I started a PhD

A PhD teaches you to be wrong productively — to fail in ways that make the field smarter. Before you apply, read our candid essay on learning to embrace experimental ambiguity and finding joy in the long journey of physical discoveries.
