Dr. Sarthak Das
Sarthak leads the Advanced Laboratory for Optoelectronics (ALO) at IIT Kharagpur. His research focuses on the fundamental limits of light-matter interactions, atomic-layer exciton physics, and CMOS-compatible optoelectronic devices. He received his Ph.D. from the Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Bangalore, and subsequently spent over four and a half years as a Research Scientist at A*STAR in Singapore (IMRE & Quantum Innovation Centre) before joining IIT Kharagpur in July 2026.
Personal journey & life outside the lab
I grew up in Berhampore, Murshidabad, West Bengal, completing my schooling at Berhampore J.N. Academy. I received my B.Tech. degree from Kalyani Government Engineering College in 2014, followed by an M.Tech. from Jadavpur University in 2016. I then pursued my Ph.D. at the Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Bangalore, graduating in 2022. Following my Ph.D., I moved to Singapore in January 2022 and worked as a Research Scientist at the Institute of Materials Research and Engineering (IMRE) and later at the Quantum Innovation Centre (QInC) under A*STAR for over four and a half years. In July 2026, I joined the Department of Electronics and Electrical Communication Engineering at IIT Kharagpur as an Assistant Professor. Outside the lab, I enjoy exploring new places, meeting people from diverse backgrounds, and learning about different cultures. I have a keen interest in trekking and long-distance running, and I frequently experiment with new recipes in the kitchen whenever time permits.
